What do you look out for when
writing crime?
Mysteries. Showdowns. Secrets. Suspense.
Do you
write in other genres?
Yes… Christian/Supernatural. Fantasy.
Have you published any other crime fiction apart from Nightshade?
No.
Short stories differ greatly from
novels in terms of length, depth, scope, and so on. Do you often make outlines
for your short stories, or since it's of a very limited scope you just delve
into the writing and see where it leads you?
No. I just delve into the writing and see where
it leads me.
Your short story, Nightshade,
features a wild and compelling hero and villain, and both of them wouldn’t give
up until one is completely down. The energy exuded by both opposing characters
makes them key to the story’s edge-of-the-seat feeling. How were you able to
make the villain that resolute?
I look out for few things when creating a villain
in any of my stories.
The villain must have strong connection to the
hero. Something like a strong bond between them. May be from the backstory or
the present. Also, I always provide a worthy opponent. Yes… someone to even
make the villain more compelling as the story progresses. And finally, a strong
purpose. It gives reasons to every of his/her actions.
Why did you open the story sometime
in 2040? Why not sometime in the past or the current year?
Interesting! Nightshade was set in Nigeria, and
for the sake of the technology which I needed to use but isn’t largely in use
in Nigeria at the moment, I thought maybe in few or many years to come, we
(Nigeria) may come to that level of enhanced technology.
For you, what makes a good crime
fiction?
Lots of suspense, mysteries and showdowns.
Have you ever got a negative
review? How did you respond to it?
Yes. Well, I believe everyone will not go with
what you’ve written. And that’s okay. In some cases, it makes you better. So I
don’t really give a concern about it unless I’m picking something positive to
use there in my next story. Not every bad review is entirely bad. Some are
pointing out to your area of improvement.
Is crime fiction complete without
the active involvement of an investigative body?
Yes… very. Depends on how you want to go with your story. You may not need an investigating body and still write a fantastic crime fiction.
Do you have a work-in-progress—a novel you can’t wait to share with the world?
Oh yes! I have two works in progress. And I
really cannot wait to be done with them. This year is just going to be so sweet
for me. (Laughs.)
Who is your model crime novelist?
Stephen King.
Crime Fiction is quite
less-explored in a country like Nigeria, where preference is given to literary
fiction and other dominant genres like romance and family drama. However, the
PROFWIC Crime Fiction Anthology has proven to be a huge success for crime
writers like you who I’d regard as pacesetters. How do you feel about this?
Happy. Like… excited. I feel like am finally doing what am meant to do. So I’m happy.

every day?
Write. Don’t stop writing.
Do not settle for whatever you think you know now. Strive for more. For excellence.
Choose your own path. You’re different. And special. Then the world will celebrate your uniqueness.
